When one is a small business owner, chances are that cheques along with other important mail from clients or suppliers are going to be coming in. Canada Post and its mail pick up and drop off times do tend to vary, and often delay, that goes without saying. But to what degree should these delays be going?

According to a June 2013 article the Toronto Star, there was a ‘Mystery delay at Canada Post’ which kept one man’s business cheques in the mail for one and a half years!

The total value of the cheques? $34, 000.

This man, Dick Mahoney, is the owner of RBM Carriers, a trucking company from East Gwillimbry Ontario. He has certainly been displeased with the post before, but since this mystery incident of him not having his mail delivered for a year and a half, he has also strained relationships and burned some bridges with companies he used to deal with on behalf of his business. Of course, these companies assured him that his cheques were in the mail and after not receiving them for so long, Dick started to assume that perhaps this is not all the fault of these companies.

He started getting frustrated with the post office, especially the Newmarket Post which handles the rural service to his business.

“They really make it hard for small businesses,” he says, adding he has phoned the post office many times to complain about inconsistent service and the impact of delays on his business, “voicing my displeasure as only an Irishman can.”[1]

A spokeswoman for Canada Post even said that she does not have the slightest clue where or when these letters addressed to Dick Mahoney could have gotten displaced. An investigation is underway, but even if any light ever does shine on this mysterious incident of disappearing mail, it will not bring back 1.5 years of frustration endured by Mr. Mahoney and it will not build back the bridges with some business partners that have been burned.
